Last year I was on The Rough Trade Books podcast alongside writer Thomas Morris. I think there was some delay in the episode going online, or something, as I completely forgot it happened. Then, last week, I listened to this very nice chat with Tom and was reminded to dig out our episode and share it with you.

Tom’s bookcover was designed by Robbie Porter, who is a good friend and an equally good bookcover designer. Follow him on instagram if you want to see behind the scenes of the book cover design process. He often posts the rejected designs as well as his lovely published covers.

4th April sees the release of Puppet, written by David Almond and illustrated by me. It’s a chapter book with lots of illustrations, suitable for ages 7+ I reckon. I read David’s books when I was at school so you can imagine what a surreal honour it was to get the chance to illustrate one myself. Puppet is a very sweet, gentle story about wonder and imagination and play.
Maybe I can do a post on creating illustrations for chapter books? Although I don’t feel especially well versed in that as this was my first go!
Owen did a nice post about what he’s been looking at recently. Some of it is stuff I looked at with him.
Because I’m IN the book process I don’t have much drawing and painting to share so here’s a painting I did before Christmas as a commission. It was based on a drawing I did years ago but updated to be a bit more colourful! I don’t do loads of private commissions but if you have something specific in mind then do get in touch and we can chat about it!
