In a desperate attempt to rectify the fact that I have, more or less, abandoned you for the whole summer I have a plan. This autumn, starting in the first week of October I’m going to post you a weekly lecture from the writing module I teach on our Goldsmiths Picture Book Masters course. This’ll take the form of either a video or a written ‘lesson’ depending on my patience for writing everything out. At the very least you’ll get a video and some slides.
Each week will include some activities, some broad overview stuff about picturebooks in the UK and, hopefully, some focused advice. This is a course for beginners, no writing experience necessary, and will be especially engineered towards illustrators wanting to write a picture book. There are ten sessions and by the tenth week (actually the eleventh week cos there’ll be a gap for ‘reading week’ when I’ll be IN ROME!), if you’ve stuck with me, you could have a draft of a story.
I might actually ‘take part’ in the course myself as I’ve not written a picture book in quite a while and could do with dipping my toe back in the water! So maybe we can all try and write something together?
If you’re not a paid subcriber this is your cue to sign up for the season! !
You can pop requests for specific information into the comments and I’ll try and incorporate it into the course where possible.
If you’re really keen on the idea of making picture books and you’d like to do some with a stomach full of pasta and the perfect golden light of italian autumn on your face you can join me in Rome in November for a picture book retreat at the beautiful Inky larks studio in the centre of Rome!
If none of this interests you, don’t worry, I’ll keep the picture book chat to the paid-section for a while and I’ll be back with some regular nonsense for everyone else very soon!

I don't know how I will fare in the 10 week course, but looking forward to giving it a go. My story is started but lies waiting. Life, it gets in the way,
Very excited for the ten week course! I was/am desperate to be in the Inky Lark retreat group too in November but can’t swing it with teacher-work this time around.
